Lawmaker Questions Safety of Upgraded Presidential Aircraft
Concerns Raised About New Air Force One Capabilities
House Democrat calls new Air Force – Representative Jim Himes, a Democratic congressman from Connecticut, has voiced significant concerns regarding the safety of President Trump’s recently upgraded Air Force One. The lawmaker characterized the presidential aircraft as presenting “a security risk,” highlighting ongoing debates about the plane’s security infrastructure and operational capabilities.
Speaking during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program with host Jake Tapper, Himes made a distinction between the current presidential aircraft and what he referred to as the “Qatari version.” He emphasized that the actual Air Force One, while appearing conventional from the outside, possesses extraordinary capabilities that many observers might find surprising.
“The actual Air Force One, not the Qatari version, … looks like a plane, but it’s got some capabilities that you wouldn’t believe,” Himes told Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
One particularly notable feature that Himes highlighted involves the aircraft’s ability to receive fuel while airborne. He described in-air refueling as an essential capability for the presidential plane, explaining that this function becomes critical during various emergency scenarios. Whether facing potential nuclear conflict, encountering situations where ground airfields become inaccessible, or dealing with other unforeseen circumstances, the aircraft must maintain the ability to extend its range through mid-air refueling operations.
“For one, in air refueling. In-air refueling is one of those remarkable, remarkable things that is really critical for the president’s plane because if something happens, ranging from nuclear war to an airfield not being accessible or whatever, that plane needs to be refueled,” he continued.
Later in the discussion, Himes reinforced his position that flying the upgraded aircraft presents genuine security concerns for the president. His comments came at a time when the aircraft has become the subject of considerable public attention and scrutiny.
Secret Service Recommendations and Diplomatic Travel
According to reporting from The New York Times published on Wednesday, Secret Service officials had advised President Trump to exercise caution regarding his departure from a NATO Summit held in Turkey. The recommendation specifically concerned the newer Air Force One, which had been gifted by Qatar and subsequently retrofitted for presidential use.
Multiple sources indicated that President Trump ultimately chose to depart from Ankara aboard the older Air Force One rather than the newer variant. This decision reflected an abundance of caution stemming from potential threats that could originate from Iran, as reported by the newspaper.
By Thursday, the White House had moved to publicly defend the newly retrofitted Air Force One, asserting that the aircraft meets all necessary safety and security standards. Steven Cheung, who serves as the White House communications director, issued a formal statement addressing the concerns raised about the presidential aircraft.
“The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff,” Steven Cheung, White House communications director, said in a statement.
Cheung’s statement further elaborated on the administration’s approach to protecting the president from various threats. He noted that numerous adversaries of the United States maintain their focus on the president, and the administration employs multiple strategies to counter these dangers.
“As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal — including distraction and misdirection — to address those threats,” he said.
When journalists sought additional commentary on the matter, the White House provided a similar statement from Cheung, reinforcing the administration’s position that the upgraded aircraft remains fully capable of ensuring presidential safety during international travel and domestic operations alike.
