Nancy Mace eyes run to replace Graham in Senate

Mace Contemplates Senate Bid Following Graham’s Passing

Nancy Mace eyes run to replace – Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, is reportedly weighing her options regarding a potential campaign to fill the Senate seat vacated by the recently deceased Senator Lindsey Graham. According to sources close to the congresswoman, she is seriously considering entering the race to succeed the South Carolina senator who passed away unexpectedly.

When queried about her interest in the position, a person well-versed in Mace’s deliberations shared a brief but telling response on Sunday morning: “YOLO.” This popular expression, meaning “You Only Live Once,” suggests the congresswoman is embracing the opportunity despite any uncertainties that may lie ahead.

Timeline and Electoral Process

Mace is anticipated to launch polling efforts throughout the current week to gauge her viability within a primary contest. The timing follows Graham’s office announcement on Sunday regarding his sudden death, which occurred overnight following a short illness. The senator had been actively campaigning for reelection and was officially designated as the Republican candidate for the upcoming election.

Under South Carolina regulations, the deadline for candidates to file for the special primary election is set for July 21. Should Mace pursue this path, the special primary would be held on August 11. If no candidate secures a majority during that initial vote, a runoff election would subsequently take place on August 25.

Meanwhile, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, also a Republican, will independently select an interim replacement to serve the remainder of Graham’s term, which concludes on January 3.

Mace’s Recent Political Journey

The congresswoman has cultivated a bold and outspoken reputation within American politics. Just last month, she placed fifth in the Republican primary race for South Carolina’s governorship, collecting approximately twelve percent of the total vote. Mace attributed part of her defeat to her status as one of four Republican lawmakers who signed a discharge petition. This action compelled a vote to release documents concerning Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who has since passed away, a move that reportedly displeased President Trump.

President Trump had publicly endorsed South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette during the gubernatorial contest, though Evette ultimately lost the nomination in a runoff to the state’s Attorney General, Alan Wilson.

Because Mace chose to compete for the governorship, she was unable to seek reelection to her House seat and was scheduled to leave Congress in January. Demonstrating her renewed interest in public service, she shared a video clip from The Godfather Part III on Sunday morning, including the memorable line: “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in…”

Reactions and Alternative Candidates

Expressing her sentiments about Graham, Mace issued a separate statement honoring the late senator. She noted that he “gave everything he had to this state and this country, from the Air Force to the United States Senate.” She added, “We did not always agree, but no one ever questioned his love for South Carolina or the fight he brought to every room he walked into.”

Earlier on Sunday, Punchbowl News reported that Rep. Joe Wilson, the father of the gubernatorial nominee and a 78-year-old Republican representing South Carolina, expressed interest in being appointed to fill Graham’s seat and subsequently running for a full term. However, Wilson later indicated that following a conversation with President Trump, he would continue serving in the House of Representatives, where Republicans maintain a narrow majority.

“I was grateful to speak with President Trump today reminiscing about our mutual friend, Senator Lindsey Graham. I assured him my goal is to remain in the House to keep his two-vote majority for the American people!!!,” Wilson wrote on social media.

On Sunday morning, President Trump revealed to NBC News’s “Meet the Press” that he already had a potential successor in mind for Graham’s position. “I have someone that I think would be great, but I don’t want to say it now, because it’s too soon with Lindsey,” Trump explained. “I don’t want to even talk about anybody, but I do have somebody that I think is really good.”
