Global Leaders and Fellow Politicians Honor Late Senator Lindsey Graham

Colleagues leaders pay tribute to Lindsey – Messages of condolence continue to arrive for Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who passed away on Saturday following what officials described as a “brief and sudden illness.” The beloved lawmaker was 71 years old at the time of his death.

Presidential and Vice Presidential Tributes

President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday to express his admiration for the late senator. In his message, Trump characterized Graham as “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.” The former president continued, noting that “He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!”

Vice President J.D. Vance also shared his reflections on X, acknowledging that while he and Graham “certainly had our disagreements,” he “couldn’t help but like him.” Vance described the deceased senator as “A one of a kind figure in our politics” and promised that he “I’ll be praying for him and his family.”

International Recognition

Leaders from around the world quickly responded to the news. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had recently met with Graham, posted on X: “Sara and I grieve with the American people over the loss of our dear friend, Senator Lindsey Graham. In our recent meeting, I said, ‘Lindsey is a great friend of Israel and a cherished friend of mine. We have no better friend than Lindsey.'” Graham had long been recognized as a staunch supporter of Israel and a prominent defense hawk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky similarly honored the senator’s contributions to global security. “Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of United States Senator Lindsey Graham. Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer,” Zelensky stated on X. The Ukrainian leader added that Graham “visited Ukraine ten times during the years of Russia’s full-scale invasion and was here with our people when it was most needed. We remained in constant dialogue, and I will miss our conversations.”

Other international figures joined in the mourning. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys both praised Graham’s dedication to transatlantic unity on the social media platform.

Domestic Reactions

Within the United States, reactions were equally heartfelt. South Carolina’s other senator, Tim Scott (R), reflected in his own post that “South Carolina lost a statesman and I’ve lost a friend.” Scott continued, “My prayers are with his sister and the rest of his family. From his humble beginnings to the Senate floor, Lindsey always led with faith, family, and South Carolina first. Lindsey remained committed to public service and doing what he loved. He always introduced levity and brought wit to the most challenging moments.”

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared on Sunday that “Lindsey Graham is irreplaceable,” emphasizing that he was “the fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) expressed his sorrow, stating his “heart is heavy this morning to learn of the passing of my friend and colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham.” Thune highlighted that “Lindsey’s long and dedicated service in the Air Force and in Congress carried him to far-flung regions of the world. He was a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) remembered Graham as someone who “had always been kind, gracious, and thoughtful,” adding that “The United States Senate lost a foreign policy giant.” Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) described Graham as “a fearless patriot, a devoted public servant, and one of the fiercest advocates for America’s national security.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X that “America has lost a Statesman,” noting that “President Trump and the White House have lost a friend.”

Personal Connections and Legacy

Hunter Biden shared a touching memory on X, recalling how Graham once referred to his father, Former President Biden, as “the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.” Hunter Biden elaborated: “That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.”

The former president himself posted on X to commemorate his time alongside Graham in Congress as members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “We disagreed often, and sometimes loudly. Lindsey and I did agree on the profound importance of public service. Like me, he loved the Senate as an institution, even with all its flaws and complexities,” he wrote. “To his family, his staff, his constituents in South Carolina, and everyone who loved him: Jill and I are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.”

Graham was actively campaigning for reelection at the time of his passing, seeking to secure a fifth term in the Senate. Throughout his career, he held significant positions including chair of the Senate Budget Committee, while also serving on the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Appropriations.
