Fetterman Questions Platner’s Entitlement as Sexual Assault Claims Mount
Senator Criticizes Maine Candidate’s Behavior Amid Growing Controversy
Fetterman – Senator John Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania in the Democratic Party, voiced strong criticism on Tuesday toward Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate hopeful from Maine. The Pennsylvania senator suggested that Platner appears to believe he deserves a place in discussions about whether he should remain in the race following fresh accusations of sexual misconduct.
Speaking with CBS News correspondent Major Garrett, Fetterman expressed his frustration with what he perceives as Platner’s attitude. “He seems now he’s entitled to be a part of this conversation to pick the next one,” the senator explained. He continued by noting that numerous individuals who helped secure Platner’s nomination have remained quiet while Maine Democrats discover these issues firsthand. According to Fetterman, those supporters would possess considerably more insight into how to succeed in the Maine electorate.
Progressives Face Backlash for Early Support
Democratic Party members and progressive advocates have been urging Platner to withdraw from contention since Politico published its report on Monday. The publication detailed how a former romantic partner of Platner’s made accusations of sexual assault during a 2021 encounter when she was significantly intoxicated.
Adding to the controversy, The Washington Post released additional information the following day. Another former girlfriend, who had previously described violent conduct toward her in a New York Times article from the previous month, claimed that Platner removed a condom without obtaining her permission during intercourse.
Fetterman remarked that he finds it “fascinating with … the left just quickly just got all in for this total dirtbag.” On Monday, the Pennsylvania senator publicly requested that Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont and other influential progressive figures within the Democratic Party issue apologies for their enthusiastic backing of Platner’s campaign.
“I mean, it’s not like — you know, how did we not know this was going to happen?” Fetterman questioned. “I mean, he is a liar. You know, he lies to his own wife. He was sending sexually explicit messages just as a newlywed and spent an entire decade on a platform like Kik. That’s for anonymous kind of sexting.”
Key Figures Call for Platner to Step Aside
The Hill newspaper has contacted the Platner campaign seeking their response to these developments.
Sanders emerged as one of several prominent Platner backers who suggested the candidate should withdraw. On Tuesday, the Vermont senator stated that he had discussed “about the best path forward for Maine” with Platner personally.
“In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside,” Sanders declared in a brief public statement.
Other notable political figures joined Sanders in calling for Platner’s departure from the race. Representatives such as Ro Khanna from California, along with Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, End Citizens United organization, and the Senate Democrats’ campaign division all urged Platner to exit the contest. Many of these supporters have since withdrawn their previous endorsements.
Platner Responds to Allegations
Jenny Racicot, a Maine resident, provided detailed testimony to both Politico and CNN’s Jake Tapper regarding her experience with Platner. She recounted how Platner entered her residence without authorization and allegedly raped her while intoxicated in 2021. According to Racicot, Platner compelled her to engage in sexual activity despite her repeated requests for him to stop. She further described how he knocked over a sewing cabinet during the incident, resulting in a needle becoming embedded in her leg.
In response to these mounting accusations, Platner released a video statement on Monday denying the allegations. He emphasized what he characterized as “the inaccuracy of the reporting” while acknowledging that the current scandal might affect his political prospects.
“Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward,” he concluded in his statement.
