“Alex Ovechkin is a Russian citizen who lives in Moscow with his family during the offseason and will live there following his retirement,” a Capitals spokesperson said. “This summer, while in Russia, he was asked by his country to participate in a video campaign. As the longest-tenured athlete in Washington, D.C. and a pillar of the community, his focus and ours is on the season ahead and the continued impact he makes on the ice and in our city.”

Ovechkin has supported Putin publicly for years. In 2017, he launched the political movement PutinTeam, and his Instagram profile has included a photograph of himself with the Russian president. The two have also been described as maintaining regular contact.

Reaction From Hockey and Washington

Dominik Hašek, the legendary Czech goaltender and Olympic champion, condemned the advertisement in a social-media post. Hašek shared an image from the campaign shoot and marked Ovechkin’s face with a red square.

“Everyone in this photograph has chosen to officially support Russia’s imperialist war in Ukraine,” Hašek wrote. “Because of each of them, many Ukrainians and Russians will be killed.”

Rep. Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, also called for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to investigate Ovechkin’s appearance. In a Wednesday letter, Wilson asked the league to clarify the rules governing players’ participation in political promotions abroad.

“It is incredibly alarming that [NHL] and [The Capitals] have allowed Alexander Ovechkin to appear in a campaign advertisement supporting the party of war criminal Putin,” Wilson wrote. “American hockey fans deserve better leadership from their star players.”
