Harris to Join Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan for Black Maternal Health Discussion

The planned gathering will center on Black maternal health, an issue that has been a prominent part of the public work of both Harris and El-Sayed. El-Sayed is a physician who previously led public health departments in Detroit and Wayne County, giving the discussion particular relevance in a state where health care, affordability and turnout are expected to shape the campaign.

El-Sayed has framed Harris’s participation as meaningful for Detroit-area communities and for voters who see her as an important national Democratic voice. He said the roundtable will offer an opportunity to discuss both maternal health and the work needed to increase participation before Election Day.

“I’m grateful that she’s coming in and having conversations about what it takes to get the turnout up, so that we can get on to working on some of these issues in the U.S. Senate,” El-Sayed said.

Black maternal health has drawn growing national attention because disparities in pregnancy-related outcomes remain a major concern for Black women and families. The Michigan event places that issue alongside a broader campaign message centered on health care access, family costs and representation in Washington.

El-Sayed has said Harris has been a leader on the matter and that residents of communities including Detroit view her as an inspirational figure. The campaign stop gives him an opportunity to connect his public-health experience with a national Democratic agenda while seeking to energize voters in one of the country’s most consequential political battlegrounds.

A race shaped by affordability and Senate control

In her endorsement, Harris argued that Michigan households are under pressure from the cost of essential goods and services. She contrasted those concerns with Republican tax policy and described El-Sayed as a candidate prepared to advocate for working families.

“While Michiganders struggle to afford everyday essentials — housing, gas, groceries, health care, and child care — Trump and Republicans in Congress are giving away $1 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy and powerful,” Harris said.

“Abdul knows that we need bold solutions to the crises facing America’s working families, and he is ready to take on this fight. I proudly stand with him to ensure we win a Democratic Senate majority in November,” she added.

The contest has already produced a notable debate dispute. Rogers declined to take part in a Fox 2 Detroit debate scheduled for Tuesday, leaving El-Sayed to speak beside an unoccupied podium during the hour-long program. Rogers maintained that he had not agreed to debate and accused moderator Roop Raj of favoring El-Sayed. Raj rejected that allegation.

For voters, the episode underscored the contrasting ways the candidates are approaching the race. El-Sayed used the televised setting to present his positions directly, while Rogers challenged the fairness of the event’s format and the moderator’s role.

Harris remains active in Democratic politics

Harris has backed several candidates during the current election cycle following her 2024 presidential loss to President Trump. Her appearances have also prompted continued discussion about whether she could seek the presidency again in 2028.

Some Democratic candidates have sought distance from Harris as they attempt to define their own political identities and respond to public perceptions of her time in office. Even so, her support can still carry significance in races where Democratic campaigns are focused on mobilizing core constituencies and building turnout in major cities.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, another Democrat frequently mentioned as a possible 2028 contender, has said he would not pursue a presidential run if Harris entered the race. The two worked in San Francisco government when Newsom served as mayor and Harris was district attorney.

“I know her base of supporters. I know her friends,” Newsom said. “The [Venn] diagram on that is just pure crossover. I wouldn’t do that to people.”

Tuesday’s Michigan event will therefore carry both immediate and longer-term political significance: it is designed to help El-Sayed build momentum in his Senate campaign, while also showing Harris’s continued ability to participate in high-stakes Democratic organizing.
