While Western capitals have largely treated the conflict as a regional dispute, the reality is far more expansive. The confrontation that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has evolved into a broader struggle between democratic nations and an authoritarian coalition.

A Warning Ignored

Back in July 2022, we cautioned that Vladimir Putin had inadvertently dragged his nation into a dystopian global struggle. This conflict pitted Russia, China, and their allied partners—Iran and North Korea—against the Western world. Despite these early warnings, policymakers in Washington and Brussels persisted in viewing the war through a narrow Eastern European lens throughout 2023.

They missed a crucial parallel: Russia’s assault on Ukraine mirrored Chinese President Xi Jinping’s growing aggression toward Taiwan and the Philippines. By February 2023, the signs were unmistakable. China conducted live-fire military exercises surrounding Taiwan through both maritime and aerial routes. Meanwhile, North Korea launched aggressive missile tests across the Sea of Japan. Iran accelerated its nuclear ambitions, accumulating 154 pounds of highly enriched uranium—sufficient for constructing multiple nuclear arms, according to IAEA director Rafael Grossi.

After watching then-President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address that month, we wondered whether he wasn’t already late to World War III.

The White House remained remarkably silent about these interconnected threats. Biden’s consistent message portrayed Ukraine as an isolated theater, merely requiring patience and defense of Kyiv. There was little discussion about protecting American allies worldwide from Putin and Xi’s ambitions to reshape global power structures. Even the devastating Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023, failed to convince Team Biden that danger had spread well beyond Ukrainian borders.

The One Nation That Understood

While traditional Western liberal democracy—largely responsible for maintaining global stability since 1945—clashed with Putin and Xi’s vision of a multipolar world order, the aggressors appeared to be gaining ground. Only one country comprehended the full scope of what was at stake: Ukraine.

Through steadfast resistance and refusal to surrender to Russian pressure, President Volodymyr Zelensky and his military commanders have been halting a wave of setbacks for the West. Zelensky recognized the danger early. Days before the invasion, he cautioned that Europe and the world confronted their most significant security challenge since the Cold War era.

Zelensky said that Putin “has already started World War Three.” Zelensky added that he believes “stopping Putin today and preventing him from occupying Ukraine is a victory for the whole world.”

Ukraine’s Strategic Transformation

What has changed is Ukraine’s approach. No longer engaged in a protracted defensive struggle, Kyiv now employs diverse asymmetrical kinetic strategies to deliver decisive blows. The Ukrainian armed forces have successfully repelled numerous Russian ground offensives during spring and summer campaigns, inflicting over 1.4 million casualties on Moscow’s military.

Today’s strategic drone operations are devastating Russia’s energy sector. Kyiv has targeted all eleven of the nation’s largest refineries, including facilities located as far as Siberia. Estimates suggest Ukraine has destroyed or severely damaged approximately 43 percent of Russia’s refining capacity, generating $13.5 billion in direct economic losses. These disruptions have created widespread shortages across Russia, with Crimea experiencing particularly severe isolation.

Beyond energy infrastructure, Ukraine has disrupted Russia’s domestic logistics. Kyiv began attacking WildBerries distribution centers—Moscow’s equivalent of Amazon—causing billions in damage. Ukraine asserts that this company plays a vital role in supplying Russian soldiers, both those currently deployed and those awaiting mobilization.

Ukraine’s achievements are also compelling Russia to withdraw from other regions. Putin failed to assist Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s recently ousted leader. Even Iran, a wartime partner against Ukraine, finds itself unable to provide meaningful support amid American military pressure.
