Celine Gounder, an epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist who serves as editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, suggested that releasing thousands of pages of Fauci’s private and professional documents less than a week before the hearing functioned more as a diversion than a significant revelation.

“Why was this done so close to the time of the hearing if they, in all seriousness, wanted people to read and digest this?” Gounder, who also served on the coronavirus advisory board for former President Biden’s transition team, told The Hill. “I did not see any bombshells in what was released.”

Divergent Views on Pandemic Origins

The ongoing dispute between the senator and the scientist originates from their fundamentally different perspectives regarding how the coronavirus pandemic began.

Senator Paul advocates for the laboratory-leak hypothesis, which suggests the outbreak emerged from viral experiments conducted at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology. Since 2021, Paul has consistently charged that the NIH provided financial support for this research, a claim Fauci has persistently rejected.

Conversely, Fauci maintains that available evidence indicates the SARS-CoV-2 virus most likely emerged naturally. As recently as May, Paul demanded that Fauci face indictment, alleging the scientist committed perjury by lying under oath concerning funding for gain-of-function studies in China.

Diary Insights Reveal Long-Standing Tensions

A diary entry dated November 4, 2021, demonstrates that Fauci had anticipated opposition from Paul for some time.

“I together with Dawn O’Connell, Janet Woodcock, Rochelle Walensky testified before the Senate HELP hearing chaired by Patty Murray,” he wrote. “We had expected to have the same conflict with Senator Rand Paul who continues to lie egregiously about the gain of function research which he claims was done at the Wuhan Institute of Virology funded by NIAID.”

While no definitive admission appears in the diary showing Fauci believed in the laboratory-leak theory, earlier entries indicate he did not consider the Wuhan wet market—where live animals were sold—as the original source. This contradicted his public statements during the pandemic’s early days, when he described the outbreak as a “direct result” of unsanitary market conditions.

The disagreement essentially centers on distinguishing between what Fauci viewed as the pandemic’s source versus its cause. The diary entries show Fauci understood the laboratory-leak theory from the pandemic’s beginning, documenting his thoughts on January 31, 2020. He recalled conversations with evolutionary biologists who doubted natural mutation could explain the virus, and he proposed assembling a larger investigative body to examine the question thoroughly.

A March 2020 paper, which laboratory-leak proponents strongly contested, indicated it was “possible that an animal source was present at” the Wuhan wet market. Fauci participated in a conference call with the paper’s authors and subsequently referenced this research during his White House briefings.

Before this, Fauci had determined that the Wuhan wet market served as “not the source, it was the amplifier” of the coronavirus. He added in his diary, “Having said that, somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans.”
