Red Paint Damages Charlie Kirk Memorial Outside Turning Point USA Headquarters

The statue, located near 4900 E. Beverly Road, was found marked with red paint. Phoenix police received calls about damage to a memorial at approximately 8:09 a.m. Sunday. Investigators are seeking information that could help identify whoever was responsible.

Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk founded, posted images showing paint splashed across the statue. The group said damage included markings on the figure’s neck and face, as well as an apparent attempt to obscure the name of Jesus on a nearby sign.

“But vandalism like this is not funny, it’s diabolical,” Turning Point USA said in a statement posted to X. “The incident happened in the middle of the night because evil never sleeps. Beyond spray painting on the neck and face, they made the intentional decision to cross out the name of Jesus on a nearby sign.”

The organization said it intends to restore the statue and is working with law enforcement as officials review video connected to the incident. Police have asked members of the public with relevant information to contact the department.

Vandalism follows anniversary of Kirk’s death

The incident came shortly after the first anniversary of Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University. Sept. 10 marked one year since he appeared at the school as part of his “American Comeback Tour,” a speaking series built around campus events where students could openly challenge his views.

Those exchanges had become a defining feature of Kirk’s public presence. Clips from the debates frequently circulated online, sometimes reaching audiences far beyond the campuses where they were recorded. At Utah Valley University, Kirk was debating student Hunter Kozak shortly before he was assassinated.

The attack, which was captured on video, became one of the most prominent episodes of political violence in 2025. It also placed intense attention on Kozak, whose participation in the discussion immediately before the shooting led to widespread online speculation and harassment.

Kozak later described enduring a year of online abuse, including accusations that he had somehow been involved in the shooting or had anticipated what would happen. He rejected those allegations and said he assisted the FBI during its investigation.

Murder case moves toward trial

Tyler Robinson was arrested and charged in connection with Kirk’s death. The case includes one count of aggravated murder and six additional charges. It was sent to trial last month, and Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted.

The criminal case remains separate from the investigation into the Phoenix vandalism. Authorities have not publicly linked the person or people responsible for damaging the statue to any other incident.

Memorials can carry especially strong meaning in the period after a public figure’s death, serving both as places of remembrance and as visible expressions of a community’s political or religious identity. Damage to such sites can quickly become part of a wider public dispute, particularly when the person being commemorated remained a polarizing figure during life.

For Turning Point USA, the statue stands at the organization’s headquarters and is therefore more than a private memorial. The group has made clear that it views the vandalism as an attack on the remembrance of its founder and the values it associates with him.

Political tributes continue

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, designated Thursday as “Charlie Kirk Day” in the state. Turning Point USA also held a memorial event at Utah Valley University that day, returning to the campus where Kirk was killed.

National Republican leaders have continued to invoke Kirk’s legacy in the lead-up to the midterm elections. During the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, President Trump described Kirk as “a great friend” and connected his memory to the party’s election effort.

“Those same people are trying to get power over you in this election, and they’re all voting Democrat,” Trump said. “We will not let them win, in Charlie’s honor.”

The vandalism investigation is ongoing. As police work to determine who damaged the monument, Turning Point USA has said the statue will be restored, leaving the memorial in place outside the Phoenix headquarters despite the attack.
