The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, prompting calls for transparency from multiple organizations and government officials.
The Incident and Initial Response
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo passed away at a medical facility following the confrontation with federal immigration personnel. The encounter unfolded shortly before seven o’clock in the morning. According to agency representatives, Immigration and Customs Enforcement was conducting a focused operation to apprehend Salgado Araujo when they attempted to stop his vehicle.
Agency officials stated that Salgado Araujo allegedly struck an ICE vehicle with his van, ignored several verbal directives, and used his vehicle as a potential weapon by trying to run over the responding officer. The federal agent discharged their firearm, claiming self-defense during the confrontation.
A Son’s Perspective
Ronaldo Salgado, the deceased man’s son, described his father as a dedicated family man who had lived in the United States for three and a half decades. He characterized his father as a diligent entrepreneur who worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for his children.
My father did not deserve this.
Ronaldo Salgado shared this sentiment on social media following the tragic event. He explained that his father was traveling to a construction site at the time of the incident. Three additional individuals, including Salgado Araujo’s brother, were also detained by federal authorities during the operation.
Timeline of Events
According to Ronaldo Salgado, his father was scheduled to collect the final members of his work crew at 6:45 in the morning. Approximately ten minutes later, unmarked federal vehicles surrounded the van, and his father was shot. Ronaldo Salgado traveled to the intersection where the confrontation occurred and observed investigators examining the scene alongside his father’s vehicle.

The son later viewed video footage of the shooting on social media and recognized his father’s voice calling for assistance after being wounded. Despite rushing to the hospital, Ronaldo Salgado learned from local news coverage that his father had already passed away.
Investigations Underway
A federal agency spokesperson confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is reviewing whether an assault on a federal officer may have occurred.
The League of United Latin American Citizens has initiated a public petition requesting that all relevant evidence be made available to citizens. LULAC leadership noted that the federal agency’s explanation mirrors the narrative presented during the January shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Local Government Response
Houston Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged that municipal investigations cannot override ongoing federal inquiries. While describing the situation as a complex and sorrowful matter, the mayor explained that the city does not currently possess sufficient access to witnesses, evidence, or legal authority to independently review how federal officials handled the shooting.
