Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven Detained at RAF Base Protest Linked to Banned Group
Suffolk Police reported that five men and two women were apprehended on Sunday as they gathered outside the primary entrance of Lakenheath airbase during a protest against the Iran conflict. The demonstration emerged after certain media outlets published reports indicating a US fighter jet, downed in Iran on Friday, was stationed at Lakenheath. The individuals were held on “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” according to the police spokesperson.
“They have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning,” the spokesperson added. “Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law impartially, regardless of future developments, and will take necessary measures if offenses are suspected.”
The arrests occurred as part of a six-day peace encampment, which included a continuous vigil at the base, concluding on Monday. The High Court determined that the ban on Palestine Action was unjustified in February, yet permitted the Home Office to challenge the ruling, maintaining the proscription until the appeal’s resolution. Lakenheath Alliance For Peace stated the detentions followed a speech delivered by retired Colonel Chris Romberg to the gathering.
Additionally, Suffolk Police announced that two individuals faced charges of intentionally blocking the road during a protest at the base on Saturday. The protests were part of a broader campaign against military actions in the region, with organisers calling for accountability and peace.
