Dogs found crammed in living room ‘doing really well’, says RSPCA
250 Dogs Rescued from Overcrowded Property Show Signs of Recovery, RSPCA Reports
The RSPCA has shared updates on 250 canines recently saved from a UK property overflowing with animals. Despite the cramped living conditions, the organization noted that the dogs are “thriving” and “recovering well.” This incident occurred in January at an undisclosed location, where the poodle crossbreeds, known as “doodles,” were discovered in a state of distress.
Owners Faced Challenging Circumstances
Lee Hopgood, RSPCA’s North of England operations leader, stated on BBC Breakfast that “remarkably, the dogs are thriving” and “recovering well.” He explained that the situation had worsened due to “extenuating family circumstances,” with numbers and conditions “rapidly spiraling out of control.” Many of the rescued dogs were found with “matted and crusted coats” needing veterinary attention.
“Surprisingly, the dogs are fine and doing really, really well,” Hopgood added, highlighting their resilience despite the harsh environment.
Rehoming Efforts and Ongoing Care
Of the 250 animals, 87 were placed under RSPCA care, while the rest were transferred to Dogs Trust. A spokesperson for the trust noted that “many have found new homes and are living happily in their forever homes.” Some dogs, including those who gave birth during their time in care, remain with the organization.
One notable case involves Boone, a doodle rescued in January, who was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. Murphy showcased Boone on BBC Breakfast, sharing his experience with the animal’s adjustment to its new life.
Factors Behind the Crisis
The RSPCA linked the incident to broader challenges like mental health struggles, the cost-of-living crisis, and substandard breeding practices. In this case, the charity decided against legal action, citing the “extremely vulnerable nature” of the owners.
Additionally, the RSPCA clarified that a “shocking” image—showing dozens of dogs packed into a living room—was not generated by artificial intelligence. The photo, which sparked debate online, underscores the “staggering reality” of multi-animal rescues in England and Wales, which have surged by 70% since 2021.
Rise in Popularity of Doodle Crossbreeds
The rescued dogs were all poodle-crossbreeds, a breed that has gained widespread appeal in recent years. According to a 2025 Dogs Trust survey, doodles rank among the top three crossbreeds owned by pet enthusiasts. In November, the RSPCA also reported rescuing 80 dogs, including chihuahuas, pomeranians, and crossbreeds, from a Bedfordshire home.
