As the procession moved forward, crowds chanted slogans including “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” according to Reuters reporting. Above the gathering, both Iraqi and Iranian flags fluttered alongside banners representing Iraqi militias backed by Tehran.
A Leader’s Final Journey
Khamenei, who maintained control over Iran for three decades and seven years, perished during U.S.-Israeli aerial bombardments on February 28. His death marked the beginning of what has become an ongoing conflict between the nations involved.
The comprehensive funeral journey spanned six days, originating in Iran on Saturday when international leaders, foreign dignitaries, and government officials assembled in Tehran to express their condolences. By Tuesday evening, Khamenei’s remains had arrived at Najaf International Airport, where they were received by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, along with senior Iraqi government representatives and prominent religious figures.
Wednesday’s procession also featured Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and various commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Following ceremonies in Najaf, the coffin was scheduled to travel to Karbala, another major pilgrimage destination in Iraq, before the body’s eventual return to Iran.
Geopolitical Tensions Mount
The funeral proceedings occurred against a backdrop of deteriorating diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he viewed the temporary agreement between the two nations as terminated following overnight military exchanges.
“To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum,” Trump told reporters while attending the NATO summit in Turkey.
U.S. Central Command verified on Tuesday that American military forces executed multiple “powerful” attacks against Iranian positions. These strikes followed Tehran’s assault on at least three commercial shipping vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched counterattacks targeting American military installations located in both Bahrain and Kuwait.
Iranian parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf publicly condemned what he described as American violations of the interim arrangement.
“The era of bullying and extortion is over. It leads nowhere. We don’t fold,” Ghalibaf stated in a message published on the social platform X.
As the funeral procession continued through Iraq’s holy cities, the world watched to see whether diplomatic channels could be reopened or if the escalating military confrontation would deepen further.
