The Trump-Graham Connection

Following the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, President Trump initially backed Graham’s sister, Darlene Graham, for an appointment to complete the remaining portion of the term, which concludes on January 3. Darlene Graham was sworn in last week to serve out this partial term, though questions remained about whether she would pursue the complete six-year term up for election this year.

After receiving encouragement from the president, Darlene Graham made her intentions clear during a Fox News appearance on Monday, confirming she would seek the full term.

Multiple Republicans Enter the Fray

Despite Trump’s stated preference for Darlene Graham, several other Republican contenders have emerged for the Senate seat. Norman welcomed all potential candidates into the race, expressing respect for his fellow South Carolinian.

“Darlene’s got every right to serve. She has courage,” Norman stated.

Representative Russel Fry also announced his candidacy on Monday, joining the growing field of Republican hopefuls.

Mace’s Criticism of Fry’s Candidacy

While supporting Norman, Mace voiced strong concerns about Fry’s decision to run for the Senate. She argued that Fry’s potential victory could create complications for Republican control of the House of Representatives.

“Under South Carolina law, if you are currently serving and running for re-election, you can run for two offices at the same time, but you cannot serve in two offices at the same time,” Mace explained. “So, if Russell Fry files and he wins, for example, that Republican seat would be vacated until May of next year, potentially handing the speaker’s gavel to Hakeem Jeffries.”

Mace was particularly critical of what she viewed as Fry’s self-interest in pursuing the Senate seat.

“I can think of nothing more egotistical than a Republican running for the U.S. Senate to give Democrat Hakeem Jeffries a leadership position as Speaker. He should not be running. I think it’s a huge risk to the party,” Mace asserted.

Personal History and Political Ties

Mace had briefly considered running for the Senate seat herself but ultimately decided against it on Monday, choosing instead to focus on what she described as “unfinished business” in the House, particularly matters related to sexual assault.

Both Mace and Norman previously competed for the South Carolina governorship earlier this year, though neither secured the Republican nomination.

The two politicians share a complicated relationship with President Trump. Norman had previously endorsed his friend, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, during the 2024 presidential primary, running counter to Trump’s campaign. Meanwhile, Mace demonstrated her independence by becoming one of four Republicans to sign a discharge petition aimed at releasing documents concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, despite Trump’s opposition.
