“I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division. About humanity, not politics.”

Sheeran also referred to Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel as “horrific,” placing his comments in the context of a conflict that has brought immense grief and trauma to people across the region.

“But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.”

His comments reflected an effort to distinguish between taking a position on human suffering and presenting himself as an expert on every political dimension of the conflict. Sheeran later acknowledged that he did not have all the answers and said he planned to listen to people with differing perspectives as he tries to understand what practical help for Palestinians affected by the war could look like.

Macklemore’s Departure From the Tour

The controversy emerged after Macklemore shared a statement on social media describing conversations involving Sheeran and Robert Kraft, who owns Kraft Group and the New England Patriots. Macklemore said Kraft told Sheeran that the rapper could not perform at Gillette Stadium after he made pro-Palestinian remarks onstage earlier in the month.

Macklemore further said that Sheeran had told him Kraft had encouraged other stadium owners to take a similar position. In his statement, the rapper described an ultimatum involving the continuation of the tour and access to major venues.

“Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.”

The rapper emphasized that he and Sheeran had been friends for 13 years and said he hoped the disagreement would not bring that friendship to an end. Rather than closing the door on the relationship, Macklemore called for continued discussion about Palestine, public neutrality and the responsibilities of artists during a humanitarian crisis.

Kraft Responds With Aid Commitment

Earlier in the week, Kraft said Sheeran had asked him to match a $2 million contribution for aid in the region. Macklemore had previously made a similar request to the billionaire businessman. Kraft said Sheeran intended to contact additional venue owners as part of an effort to bring people together despite the conflict surrounding the tour.

“Ed now plans to reach out to other venue owners and our goal is to continue to work together to build bridges.”

Kraft also said that he has supported efforts over decades to expand opportunity for Palestinians, including initiatives that brought Palestinians and Israelis together to build businesses, create jobs and develop relationships. His statement sought to answer criticism while stressing that support for Palestinians and concern for Israel need not be treated as mutually exclusive.

“In addition, I’d like the people who are speaking in support of the Palestinian people to know that for decades, I have supported efforts to create opportunity for Palestinians and have brought young Palestinians and Israelis together to build businesses, create jobs and forge relationships.”

By the end of his Philadelphia remarks, Sheeran returned to the purpose of the concert itself.
