Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’
US President Donald Trump emphasized that the trade agreement with the United Kingdom remains flexible, stating it “can always be altered.” During a conversation with Sky News on Wednesday, he highlighted the deal as a favorable outcome, asserting it was “more beneficial than what was required.” This remark followed recent tensions in the US-UK alliance, which have intensified since Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer declined to support the US-Israel conflict against Iran in late February.
“We provided a favorable trade agreement, more advantageous than what was necessary,” Trump remarked, addressing the evolving dynamics of the partnership.
The leader’s comments underscored a shift in his assessment of the relationship, which he described as “better” in the past but noted as “sad” in its current state. Trump criticized Starmer’s approach to international affairs, including his handling of the Middle East, while acknowledging a personal fondness for the prime minister. However, he characterized the UK’s policies on immigration and energy as “insane,” suggesting a broader discontent.
“When we sought their support, they were absent. When we required assistance, they were not present,” Trump said, reflecting on the UK’s perceived lack of alignment.
In May of the previous year, the UK secured a pioneering tariff agreement with Trump, marking the first such deal since his return to the presidency. This agreement reduced import duties on automobiles, aluminium, and steel. Despite recent strains over the Middle East, Trump maintained that these issues would not overshadow the upcoming state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “The King has no role in that process,” he stated, expressing anticipation for the event.
“I’m looking forward to just being with him. He’s a remarkable individual,” Trump added, highlighting his personal rapport with the monarch.
