Young Woman’s Organ Donation Offers Comfort to Family
A 19-year-old British woman lost her life during a visit to Vietnam, allegedly in a traffic incident. Orla Wates was part of a mountain tour in the northern region when she fell from the motorcycle’s rear. Viet Nam News reported she was taken to Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, where she passed away on 2 April, with her parents by her side.
“Orla was described as beautiful, independent, and full of humor, with a clever mind,” said her mother, Henrietta Wates. “She took pride in her appearance and embraced life with enthusiasm.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office expressed condolences, stating their thoughts were with Orla’s family and friends after her unfortunate passing in Vietnam. Officials confirmed ongoing communication with local authorities and support for the family during this challenging period.
Orla’s mother emphasized the family’s decision to donate her organs, explaining, “We chose to give her life a new purpose by helping others. Knowing she lives on through this brings us comfort.” The hospital noted the donation benefited “five critically ill Vietnamese patients.”
“In the face of deep sorrow, her family made a heartfelt choice that went beyond borders,” remarked a hospital representative. “One journey ended, but her life continues quietly in those who received her gift.”
Orla’s father, Andrew Wates, shared his daughter’s affection for Vietnam, calling the donation “very meaningful” for their family. The Ha Giang Loop, a 350km mountain road trip, is often recommended for travelers, though local guides are advised for novices. Vietnam’s roads are known for high accident risks, with over 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries recorded in 2024.
