Households could get free electricity for doing washing on sunny weekends
Energy companies may offer households and businesses reduced or complimentary electricity rates during times when energy production exceeds demand, such as sunny weekends. This initiative, introduced by the National Energy System Operator (NESO), was approved by the industry regulator Ofgem at the end of March. The goal is to incentivize consumers to align their appliance usage with periods of surplus power, helping to prevent waste and enhance grid stability.
Summer months typically see lower electricity demand due to warmer weather and longer days, while solar power generation rises. NESO highlighted that weather patterns are now a major factor in shaping demand, with smaller, local generators reducing dependence on large power stations. As surplus energy becomes more frequent, the updated scheme aims to reward customers for using devices like washing machines, dishwashers, and electric vehicles during low-demand periods.
Participation is limited to households with smart meters, and suppliers must be part of the program. Rewards will differ across providers and may include discounted rates, free electricity, or points redeemable for gift cards. Companies already involved are British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy. According to NESO, the system’s complexity during low-demand periods is growing, requiring more frequent use of tools to ensure safety and efficiency.
“The complexity of operating the system at low demand is increasing, and we may need to use more of our tools, and use them more often, than in previous summers,” NESO stated. This could involve directing power stations to reduce output during times of excess supply.
