Collision leaves one boy dead, another critically injured
Finley Dawson, 14, and his 15-year-old passenger were thrown from the e-bike during the crash. While Finley was rushed to hospital, his injuries were described as ‘non-survivable,’ resulting in his death the next day. His friend remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
“There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life.”
Derbyshire police confirmed that the Kia Sportage driver is considered a witness and is helping with ongoing investigations. No arrests have been made so far. The families of both boys have issued a joint statement, emphasizing the risks associated with riding electric motorbikes on public roads.
According to UK regulations, individuals must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving licence to operate an electric motorbike on roads. However, electric bikes with pedals are permitted for riders aged 14 and older, provided their maximum power output does not exceed 250 watts. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of these rules.
