I ditched bleak Britain and moved to a country I’d never visited before
Andrew Stocks never imagined that leaving the UK for a foreign land would lead to his financial transformation. Now 55, he recounts how his move to Thailand at 18 set the stage for his unexpected rise to millionaire status.
A Teen’s Leap of Faith
From his childhood in Devon, Andrew harbored a deep desire to escape the UK’s routine. At just 18, he embarked on a journey of 6,000 miles, armed with little more than ambition and a modest savings of £300,000.
He hadn’t set foot in Thailand prior to the move, leaving his parents behind without immediate plans for employment or accommodation. ‘When I first arrived, my money vanished faster than I anticipated,’ Andrew shares. ‘I knew I had to act quickly.’
‘I never believed I’d fail, as I always thought that what will be will be, and one day, a new door would open for me.’
Unlike typical young travelers, Andrew had already ventured into property investments as a teenager. He secured a loan from a close friend to purchase his first rental home, which was later transferred to his name on his 18th birthday. Using his earnings, he expanded his portfolio, eventually selling properties for profit.
With his financial foundation laid, Andrew turned his attention to establishing a business in Thailand. Starting as a volunteer for a charity, he connected with a local developer and leveraged his savings to co-found a retirement resort and spa tailored for expatriates. The warm climate, welcoming community, and business-friendly policies quickly captivated him.
From Niche to Success
Today, his company, Sunshine International Retirement Residences, Resorts & Spas, operates six luxury resorts and hotels, all rated four stars or above, alongside complementary amenities like restaurants and apartments. The flagship property boasts 250 rooms, private pool villas, and a tropical garden designed for aging guests.
Andrew estimates his net worth at least £20 million, attributing his success to years of relentless effort. He highlights Thailand’s appeal for retirees, noting that its cost-effectiveness and accessible healthcare make it a compelling alternative to traditional destinations like Spain and France.
‘I believe more Brits should come here. It provides a lifestyle you can only dream of.’
Despite his achievements, Andrew remains grounded. ‘I don’t feel wealthy, as it’s all in property. Any earnings I make, I reinvest into my company,’ he explains. He also reflects on the country’s rising costs, saying, ‘It was too expensive then and it’s much more expensive now. The country, in general, is going down.’
Yet, he remains proud of his decision. ‘I’m still British, but I’m much prouder to have left the rat race before it got the better of me. I wouldn’t be a millionaire had I stayed.’
A Vision for the Future
Andrew’s journey underscores a growing trend among British retirees seeking affordable, high-quality living abroad. He believes Thailand’s combination of affordability and healthcare accessibility makes it a prime destination for those looking to escape the UK’s economic climate.
His story, while unique, resonates with many who have made similar choices. As he continues to expand his ventures, Andrew’s legacy in Thailand’s expat community grows, offering a blueprint for those chasing a different path.
