The DSA’s Ambitious Vision

Those who dismiss democratic socialists as merely impatient liberals should examine the organization’s recently released program. The document outlines a comprehensive transformation of American society that goes far beyond traditional progressive policies.

The DSA’s platform calls for moving beyond capitalism, with the government assuming responsibility for essential services including food, education, healthcare, transportation, and housing. Major corporations would come under public ownership, wealth would be heavily taxed, and employment would be guaranteed for all citizens.

On social issues, the organization advocates for open borders, the gradual elimination of police and prison systems, the revival of the Green New Deal, and the prohibition of fossil fuels. The organization wants to eliminate the Constitution, abolish the Senate, the presidency, and the Supreme Court, and concentrate all governing authority in the House of Representatives. The DSA’s vision extends to international relations as well. The organization plans to dismantle what it calls the “US war machine,” reduce Pentagon funding, close military installations abroad, and dissolve collective security agreements. On the Middle East, the platform emphasizes cutting assistance to Israel and establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The organization’s “Workers Deserve More” manifesto has been criticized for lacking analytical rigor. Critics note that democratic socialism’s natural environment is academic institutions rather than industrial workplaces or community organizations.

A DSA membership survey in 2021 found that privileged white college grads far outnumber proletarians.
