Trump criticises Nato after meeting alliance chief describes as ‘very frank’
Following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, US President Donald Trump reiterated his criticism of the alliance for not supporting the United States in the Iran conflict. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared: “NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN.”
Despite notable differences in their views, Rutte characterized the exchange with Trump as “very frank” and “very open.” The meeting, which took place over two hours, aimed to persuade Trump that remaining in NATO benefits both the alliance and the US. However, it remains uncertain whether Rutte’s arguments will alleviate Trump’s concerns.
“NATO was tested and they failed,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, echoing Trump’s sentiment. She added that NATO members had “turned their backs on the American people,” who subsidize their defense budgets, and that Trump would engage in a “very frank and candid conversation” with the Secretary General.
Before the session, Trump had contemplated exiting NATO after several member nations refused to meet his demands to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize oil prices. The White House provided no specifics about the discussions, but Rutte emphasized that European countries generally contributed to the alliance’s operations through basing, logistics, and overflights.
Rutte noted that the situation was “nuanced,” highlighting the support from most European nations during the Iran conflict. He credited Trump’s leadership for reducing Iran’s nuclear threat and stated that NATO members view the war as a justified action. Yet, the alliance faces its most significant challenge in history due to Trump’s escalating frustrations.
At the end of 2023, Congress passed a resolution requiring a two-thirds Senate majority or a congressional act to unilaterally withdraw from NATO. This legislative move adds a layer of complexity to Trump’s potential exit. Meanwhile, his post on Truth Social also referenced Greenland, a long-standing point of contention, with the remark: “REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!”
