World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track

Arsenal’s recent resurgence in European competition has been anchored by David Raya’s exceptional performances. The Spaniard’s seven clean sheets in the Champions League this season have positioned him as a leading candidate for global recognition, according to his teammates. In a crucial 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon, Raya’s four decisive interventions were pivotal, with Kai Havertz’s late goal sealing the victory.

Despite being top of the Premier League and a European quarter-finalist, Raya’s inclusion in player of the year discussions is rare for a goalkeeper. This season, he has maintained 22 clean sheets in 41 appearances across all competitions—a tally that highlights his consistency. The achievement came at a vital moment for Arsenal, following two consecutive defeats, which had cast doubt on their title ambitions.

Raya’s absence from those setbacks was notable, as Mikel Arteta had opted for Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and the FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton. Kepa’s error in the City game cost Arsenal an early goal, prolonging their trophy drought since 2020. However, Raya’s display against Sporting demonstrated his value as the Gunners’ first-choice keeper.

“Unbelievable,” said Havertz, who celebrated the decisive goal. “For me, he’s the best keeper in the world. His performances have saved us countless times, and we’re thrilled to have him on our team.”

Raya’s influence extends beyond goalkeeping. His distribution and tactical awareness have elevated Arsenal’s attacking play, as Arteta acknowledged. “The modern goalkeeper has evolved significantly,” the manager noted. “David’s courage and willingness to take on responsibilities beyond traditional roles are what set him apart.”

The clean sheet against Sporting marked Raya’s seventh in the Champions League this season—a record unmatched by any other keeper or team in the competition. “These clean sheets are vital,” he explained. “They simplify the game and give us confidence, especially in tight matches where a late goal can decide everything.”

With 15 clean sheets in Premier League matches this season, Raya leads the division in that category. While he shared the Golden Glove award with Matz Sels in 2024-25, Arsenal hopes his continued excellence will soon align with their pursuit of silverware.
