Tories urge Waitrose to reinstate worker sacked ‘after tackling shoplifter’

Tories Push for Waitrose to Rehire Employee Dismissed After Confronting Shoplifter

Conservative leaders have sent a letter to Waitrose demanding the reinstatement of an employee who claims he was fired following a dispute with a shoplifter attempting to steal Easter eggs. Walker Smith, 54, recounted to the Guardian that he lost his job two days after a brief altercation, which occurred during a confrontation with the thief. The incident, he said, ended when the shoplifter fled the scene.

Conservative Leaders’ Response

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticized Waitrose’s decision, stating that the case highlights a “broader and increasingly common issue” of individuals committing theft without fear of repercussions. He argued that Smith should be rehired and given a bonus for his “courage and proactive actions.” Philp also accused the store of treating the situation “disgracefully,” warning that the dismissal could lead to financial hardship for Smith.

“Staff safety must come first. But dismissing a long-serving employee in these circumstances sends entirely the wrong message. It penalises those who act, while offenders are left unchecked.”

Waitrose’s Statement

Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, defended its decision, asserting that the incident “does not capture the full context.” A spokesperson emphasized that the store adheres to a standard appeals process to ensure fairness. “We have policies in place to safeguard both partners and customers,” they said, adding that safety is a top priority.

“The safety and security of our partners and customers couldn’t be more important to us. We have policies in place to protect both. We’ve had incidents where our partners have been hospitalised when challenging shoplifters. Luckily, they have always recovered, but that might not always be the case.”

Smith explained that he intervened at the Clapham Junction store in south London after witnessing thefts “day after day for five years.” He described the shoplifter as someone who stole “everything from small items to entire bottles of wine.” According to the Guardian, Smith grabbed the thief’s bag, leading to a short scuffle. A chocolate egg broke during the struggle, and he tossed a piece “out of frustration” toward shopping trolleys.

“We’re not allowed to do anything.”

Following the incident, Smith apologized to the manager but said the matter was “escalated” within the company. Waitrose also mentioned its efforts to advocate for stronger protections for retail workers, including campaigns to make shoplifting a distinct criminal offense. The store reiterated that its policies are “clearly understood and must be strictly followed” to prevent risks to life.
