Macron dismisses Trump’s ‘inelegant’ dig about his marriage
During a heated exchange over NATO policies, French President Emmanuel Macron rebuffed Donald Trump’s jibe about his marital life. The U.S. leader had criticized Macron for his wife’s treatment, suggesting she was harsh on him. Macron, however, dismissed the remark as lacking in sophistication, stating it did not warrant a reply.
“We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway,” Trump said, referencing NATO allies. “I call up France, Macron — whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw,” he added, alluding to a 2023 clip where Brigitte Macron appeared to push the president’s face during a visit to Vietnam.
In a fleeting YouTube post later removed by the White House, Trump mimicked Macron’s tone while attacking NATO’s role in military operations against Iran. The president’s comments included a mocking portrayal of Macron, highlighting his strained relationship with the French leader.
“No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won,” Trump continued, adopting a faux French accent. His jab, though, was met with calm defiance from Macron, who emphasized the need for focus beyond personal remarks.
Macron said the remarks were “neither elegant nor up to standard,” and chose not to engage further. Instead, he urged attention toward stabilizing the Middle East and achieving peace. “There is too much talk, and it’s all over the place,” he remarked, critiquing Trump’s approach to conflict. “We all need stability, calm, a return to peace — this isn’t a show!”
