Trump Visits Nebraska as Ricketts Faces a Closer Senate Race

Provpnadvice.com – Trump takes red state midterm campaigning to Grand Island, Neb., on Monday, joining Sen. Pete Ricketts as Republicans watch a Senate contest that has drawn more attention than expected in a state long dominated by the GOP.

Ricketts won a 2024 special election to serve the remainder of former Sen. Ben Sasse’s term and is now seeking a full six-year term. Republicans still hold a major advantage across Nebraska politics, but independent candidate Dan Osborn has become a more serious challenger after his stronger-than-expected 2024 race against Sen. Deb Fischer.

Osborn finished within 7 percentage points of Fischer two years ago. Nebraska Democrats later rallied behind him after their 2026 nominee, Cindy Burbank, withdrew and endorsed his campaign. Osborn has said he would not caucus with either major party if elected.

Polling puts new focus on Nebraska

Recent surveys have suggested a tighter race. A Wedgewood Polls survey conducted last month showed Ricketts ahead of Osborn, 52 percent to 48 percent, while a SurveyUSA poll from the same period put Osborn ahead, 46 percent to 42 percent, with 7 percent undecided. Osborn’s campaign has also released internal polling describing the contest as effectively tied.

National race handicappers have taken notice. Cook Political Report shifted the contest from solid Republican to likely Republican after Burbank left the race, while Decision Desk HQ put Ricketts’s chance of winning at 81 percent, down from 87 percent in August.

Trump takes red state midterm campaigning into a place where Republicans remain confident of their eventual advantage. Nick Puglia, press secretary for the GOP’s Senate campaign arm, said Osborn “will be rejected once again.”

Nebraska Democratic Party chair Vince Powers said the president’s Grand Island visit shows Republicans are treating the contest seriously.

“Trump’s coming to Nebraska — it tells you that the polls that Osborn’s campaign’s been releasing all year must have some accuracy to them,” Powers said.

Grand Island stop highlights rural concerns

Powers compared the visit to a Democratic president campaigning in San Francisco, underscoring how unusual it is for a Republican White House campaign operation to focus on conservative central Nebraska. He said former President George W. Bush was the last Republican president to campaign there, appearing in support of Ricketts’s earlier Senate bid and then-Rep. Adrian Smith. Ricketts lost that race.

Osborn’s independent status may offer him an opening with voters reluctant to support a Democrat, particularly in rural parts of the state. Still, he must assemble a broad coalition to overcome Nebraska’s strong Republican lean.

Nebraska Republican consultant Ryan Horn said choosing Grand Island rather than Omaha signaled concern about the Senate race.

“They didn’t choose Omaha; they chose Grand Island. And that means that they are worried about this Senate race,” Horn said.

Horn argued that close contests for Senate and governor reflect pressure on rural communities from some Trump administration policies. Osborn’s campaign, meanwhile, portrayed the visit as proof that Ricketts is relying on national party support as the race tightens.

Trump takes red state midterm efforts to Nebraska after other administration figures also visited the state. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. traveled there in August, and Vice President Vance made a September stop as outside political spending increased.
