Maine brewery owner throws hat in ring to replace Platner
Maine Beer Entrepreneur Enters Race to Succeed Platner in Senate Contest
Maine brewery owner throws hat in ring - Following a series of serious allegations, the Democratic Party in Maine is now searching for a new candidate to fill the void left by Graham Platner. On Wednesday, Dan Kleban, the proprietor of Maine Beer Company located in Freeport, officially announced his candidacy through a Substack publication. This move comes after the brewery owner had previously paused his own bid for the Senate last October in order to throw his support behind Maine Governor Janet Mills.
A Timeline of Political Shifts
The path to this moment has been marked by several significant developments in Maine politics. Governor Mills had initially been a strong contender for the Senate seat but ultimately decided to withdraw from the race in April. Her decision was primarily driven by concerns regarding insufficient financial backing for a competitive campaign. With Mills stepping aside, Platner found himself without any primary opposition, positioning him as the likely Democratic nominee.
However, that trajectory changed dramatically when two of Platner's former romantic partners publicly came forward with accusations of rape. These allegations prompted a swift response from the Democratic establishment, with more than a dozen senators and allied organizations quickly pulling their support for Platner's campaign. Party leaders and supporters have since emphasized the need for a replacement candidate who shares Platner's core values and policy priorities.
Kleban's Vision for Leadership
In his announcement, Kleban highlighted his deep connections with Maine residents. He emphasized his years of engaging with community members in casual settings at his brewery and across the state. His message centered on frustration with what he perceives as a political system dominated by corporate influence and outside interference.
"I've spent years talking to Mainers over a beer in our taproom and throughout the community. We're all sick and tired of a system that's been rigged by corporate interests, and we've had enough meddling from Washington establishment insiders and New York City consultants trying to dictate who represents us," Kleban stated in his written announcement.
He further articulated his desire to bring fresh perspectives to federal governance, suggesting that the current generation of leaders has repeatedly disappointed voters. Kleban positioned himself as someone capable of bridging divides within the Democratic Party while maintaining a clear focus on defeating the Republican incumbent, Senator Susan Collins, in the November election.
"Over the next two weeks, we need an open, transparent process to select our nominee. I'm ready to fight for Mainers and bring a new generation of leadership to Washington. I believe I can unite our party and finally defeat Susan Collins in November," he wrote.
Financial Standing and Policy Alignment
Kleban brings substantial financial resources to the race, having previously accumulated $458,786 in campaign funds during his Democratic primary effort. His policy positions reportedly align closely with those that characterized Platner's campaign platform, making him a natural choice for party members seeking continuity.
Competing Candidates Emerge
The field for Platner's replacement has grown increasingly competitive. Several prominent Maine figures have emerged as potential contenders. Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has been mentioned as a possibility. Nirav Shah, who serves as the director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has also drawn attention. Additionally, Shenna Bellows, a former state senator and current executive director of the Maine ACLU branch, remains in consideration. Jordan Wood, who previously worked as chief of staff for former Representative Katie Porter from California, rounds out the list of notable candidates exploring the opportunity.
As the Democratic Party in Maine works through its selection process, Kleban's announcement adds momentum to the search for a candidate who can honor Platner's legacy while moving the party forward with renewed energy and purpose.
